Whether you are a beer lover or travelling with a beer lover a visit to Australia's oldest brewery - Cascade - should be on your list to visit. Cascade Brewery was started by Peter Degraves in 1824 when Hobart Town had 55 licensed pubs for a population of 10,000. Today, Cascade Premium Lager is one of the most awarded beers in the country and was recently named Top Premium Beer in Australia.
The factory with its instantly recognisable façade sits at the base of Mt Wellington from which it sources the pure uncontaminated waters that help create its smooth flavour. Renowned for its legendary taste and exceptionally smooth, full flavour, it's longer than usual maturation (extended lagering) creates elegant fruit flavours, and a full mid-palate lingering to a crisp, spicy hop finish.After the 90-minute tour you visit the cottage gardens and the Woodstock Homestead where you can sample the various beers or soft drinks. The retail shop and gardens are open Monday to Friday 0900 to 1600 (including public holidays). Tours of the brewery are conducted seven days a week and take about two hours. Phone bookings are essential. Restaurant facilities also available.
