Lipson Cove is a wonderfully secluded coastal camping spot, featuring beach and rock fishing, gentle surf and safe swimming, campsites behind the dunes and a delightful outlook over Spencer Gulf. 120 metres offshore is Lipson Island Conservation Park, which is home to a variety of roosting seabirds, including the Little Blue or Fairy Penguin. The welfare of these animals and the future of this understated paradise is in jeopardy though- threatened by a proposal to construct a new bulk commodities port called Port Spencer a kilometre to the north of Lipson Island. A grass-roots campaign is developing to urge for relocation of the proposed port. With enough public support, we should see this magical destination protected for the birds, the marine life and future generations of visitors.
