At the centre of Canberra’s many organised, sculptured boulevards is do-it-yourself restaurant, Pepper Lunch on Bunda Street. An unassuming frontage gives way to a welcoming interior of warm brick and wood panelling, complete with a stone tiled bar, light wooden dividers and lifelike artificial grass. Originating in Japan, the concept of Pepper Lunch is that the plate itself is the grill and the diner is the Chef, stirring and frying up Asian-style fare, as well as taking on the responsibility of sauces and seasoning. Start off with a Pepper salad with salmon, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, red onion, corn and sesame dressing, before slicing a knife into premium Porterhouse steak. Perhaps a sizzling scallop katsu curry entices with rice, or twirl your fork around creamy chicken teppan pasta.
