Happy hour is when I wine down!
The historical roots of Happy Hour date all the way back to the early 20th Century – the term is actually derived from American Naval slang in the 1920s - after World War I, happy hours were periods of time when sailors could engage in relaxing activities to relieve themselves of the drudgery of life at sea.
These days we head to our favourite venues for drinks and meal deals to make Happy Hour even happier…why limit happy to one hour?
Here are four of our fave venues where every hour is happy:
Classic Margaritas & Coronas
Indulge in a journey of authentic flavours at Hecho en Mexico on Bay Street in Brighton to satisfy post-beach food cravings. Located just a short stroll from Brighton Beach, this bright and breezy restaurant offers a covered alfresco area for dining on balmy days, while indoors rocks a vibrant vibe of colourful Day of the Dead murals, neon signage, trailing greenery and recycled timber furniture.
Bring your amigos for Happy Hour every Monday to Friday from noon until 5pm and enjoy drinks deals on classic Margaritas, Corona beer and Sangria to go with snacks such as habanero chicken wings, smoked stuffed jalapeños and coal-grilled fresh corn, with chipotle aioli, ricotta, tajin and lime.
Local Weekly Friday Tradition
Experience the foxy and sophisticated bar, restaurant and functions venue Mr McCracken on Larkin Boulevard in Essendon Fields, for a new level of entertainment in Melbourne’s inner northern suburbs. With large, spacious outdoor areas including an amazing rock fireplace, take time to chill out and relax with a drop from the superb wine collection; or dine at leisure indoors where an earthy, inviting décor sets the scene for memorable meals.
You’re not a true Essendon local if you’ve never had your knockoffs at Mr McCracken’s – Friday night Happy Hour is a weekly tradition for those in need of an out-of-office catch-up, enjoy drink specials on beer, wine and Aperol Spritz, along with roaming complimentary bar snacks.
Cosmopolitan Experience
Eleven on Waymouth Street is a Modern Australian restaurant and open-air bar nestled between high-rise buildings in the heart of the Adelaide CBD. Surrounded by greenery and city lights, Eleven offers a cosmopolitan experience inspired by the rooftops of New York and the laneways of Paris with an inventive, modern menu that showcases the best local and seasonal produce.
Join family and friends over a cold beer in the sun and graze on plates such as a prawn and lobster roll for lunch; or drop by later for a glass of bubbles and a curated cheese board with lavash, quince gel, muscatels and candied dried pear.
Laid-back Vibe and Great Food
Kissed by the salty simplicity of a sweltering afternoon in Mexico, Sayulita on Rosenthal Avenue in Lane Cove provides a perfect pocket of harmony for discerning diners. Named after the quintessential Mexican seaside town where locals wake up to the perfumed warmth of corn dough, this lively venue resides in foodie hub The Canopy and projects a laid-back vibe of a terracotta tiled bar, white subway tiles and trailing greenery.
Tuesdays are the day to hit Sayulita as the perfect excuse to take the night off from the kitchen and catch up with amigos over $5 tacos like battered barramundi, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, coriander, pickled onion and chipotle aioli, washed down with a cheeky Watermelon Sangria.
