Chocoholics know you can’t teach an old dog new Twix…but what about new weird and wonderful flavours?
Here are six weird chocolate combinations you need to try – at least once!
Vegemite:
Nothing is more Aussie than Vegemite…you either love it or hate it. How about combined with chocolate? The salty, malty notes of Vegemite complement the natural richness of cocoa, especially in dark chocolate – try a tiny dollop of Vegemite on your next chocolate bar and tell us what you think!
Chocolate-covered Insects:
Did you know that roughly 2 billion people around the globe eat insects as part of a traditional diet? While they are only small, insects carry a whole bunch of nutrients and are rich in protein, healthy fats, iron and calcium. If you fancy sampling a critter or two, having them coated in chocolate is a good way to go, there are plenty of places to buy them online if you are craving a cricket or ant.
Wasabi:
Chilli and chocolate – but not how you know it. Wasabi chocolate is perfect for those who like a bit of a kick to their cocoa – try Koko Black’s wasabi peas coated in 54% dark chocolate for the perfect balance of flavour and crunch, along with a spiciness that hits the nose.
Lavender:
What do you think of when you picture lavender…chocolate probably doesn’t immediately spring to mind. However, if you get the balance just right, lavender gives off a fragrant and soothing flavour, with subtle floral notes at the back. Combining the pure essence of lavender with smooth, rich dark chocolate, the Tasmanian Lavender Company produces an amazing wild lavender Belgian dark chocolate that is to die for.
Heinz Ketchup:
You may be used to seeing Heinz ketchup on your kitchen table, but how about in your chocolate? English company Fortnum & Mason decided this would be a great combination for Valentine’s Day creating ketchup truffles – encased in milk, dark and white chocolate, these little morsels had the creaminess and richness of cocoa, combined with the tanginess of tomato.
Potato Kit Kat:
Japan seems to be the place for unusual chocolate flavours, with potato-flavoured Kit Kats being right up there. Although it may seem strange to us, it’s not the first time, potatoes and the cocoa bean have joined forces – in 2016 McDonald’s introduced chocolate-covered fries to Japanese palates.
