Ashes to Ashes – But is It Cricket? Three Gourmet Toasties to Dismiss Hunger.

By Leigh O’Connor.

A controversial and chaotic end to the second Ashes test at Lord’s has left the cricket world divided – there is no doubt the correct umpiring decision was made, but is it cricket?

As Australia secured a 2-0 lead in the iconic Ashes five-match series and heads into tomorrow’s third encounter at Headingley, fans and purists around the globe are hot under the collar about how English batter Jonny Bairstow was dismissed.

Leaving his crease thinking the over was completed, Aussie wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw down the stumps leaving the Englishman stranded and out by the on-field umpires and TMO. Naturally, the Poms weren’t happy, resulting in acrimony, finger-pointing and abuse.

Cries of ‘it’s just not cricket’ erupted, along with a slam from English captain Ben Stokes saying it was not in the ‘spirit of the game’ and he wouldn’t want to win a test that way.

Hang on! Didn’t Bairstow attempt to stump Marnus Labuschagne in a similar fashion on day three of the same match?

You can’t have your toastie and eat it too, guys!

This one is quick and easy to make and sure to bowl a maiden over, made with light or dark rye sourdough, with a side of potato chips.

What snack could be more Aussie than kangaroo ragu jaffles – these tempters are a no-brainer when it comes to appealing to sports fanatics looking to up their batting average.

Using kangaroo tails, the ragu will need to be made before the start of play so you can put it all together in the drinks break to clean bowl friends and family’s hunger pangs.

This spicy lamb mince jaffle comes from a borek recipe by Chef Darren Purchese’s wife, Cath – who is a Middle Eastern food expert. It is easy to make, delicious and the pine nuts are a great addition, while spices and herbs are added last to keep things fresh.
