Does Pineapple Belong on a Pizza? You Tell Us!

Many foods have taken their hits over the years – avocado on toast, cake pops and kale Caesar salad spring to mind – but none more so than the Hawaiian pizza!

Famous Chefs have jumped on the bandwagon…Gordon Ramsay once said (and we are editing this quote) ‘You don’t put……pineapple on pizza’; while the President of Iceland once vowed he would outlaw pineapple on a pizza if he could.

What’s all the fuss, you ask? The combination of ham, bacon, pineapple and cheese divides people like no other food item – you either love it or hate it!

Pineapple on a pizza originated in the small Canadian town of Chatham in Ontario, far from the beaches of Hawaii that have become the namesake for the dish; restaurant owner and Chef, Sam Panopoulos has been credited for being the father of the Hawaiian pizza.

The mass popularity of pizza is often linked to returning servicemen from World War II who had sampled the dish in Italy – in 1962, Panopoulos added canned pineapple to pizzas in his restaurant and the taste quickly caught on.

In Australia, this fiery pizza debate isn’t going away any time soon…in fact, millions of Aussies specifically ask for more pineapple to be added to their pies, compared to those who want it removed.

Our Instagram poll completed last week found that 62% of respondents love pineapple on their pizza, 21% said no and 17% said absolutely not – seems we love a little piece of the tropics after all.

We also are not in favour of anchovies on our pizza, along with olives, capsicum, potato and egg – as for those dessert pizzas, they are a no-go smothered in chocolate.

Seems this debate isn’t going away any time soon. Pizza anyone?
