Live like every day is Taco Tuesday - next Tuesday, October 4 is the ultimate opportunity to celebrate all things Mexican, on National Taco Day.
This is nacho average day – it is Juan out of the ordinary, as taco lovers wrap their tortillas around beef, pork, chicken, or seafood, to create a South of the Border version of a sandwich.
Can you guess how much the world’s most expensive taco costs and what is in it?
The Grand Velas Los Cabos resort in Mexico is credited with offering the most decadent taco on the planet coming in at US$25,000 (AU$38,300) and available at the resort’s Frida restaurant.
Featuring a gold-flaked tortilla, the taco is made from premium ingredients including Kobe beef, langoustines, Almas Beluga caviar and black truffle brie cheese. It’s topped with salsa made from dried morita chilli peppers, tequila and civet coffee.
While this may not be to everyone’s tastes and wallets, there is a taco out there for you! Here are four of our favourite joints to celebrate on Tuesday:
For the most authentic Mexican fare you can find in Mackay, amigos head along Bourke Street to find Jac’s Place. This food truck cantina nestles in a permanent location at the Big 4 Caravan Park in Bucasia, offering visitors and locals alike a little slice of Mexico without leaving Queensland; expect handmade white or blue corn tortillas, burgers in custom-made Italian rolls and the best coffee in town.
Don your sombrero and say gracias to a breakfast taco of bacon, egg, mushroom, avocado and chipotle chicken; or chow down on grilled prawn, avocado, slaw, jalapeños and chilli jam, enjoyed with a cold brewed iced coffee.
Arriba, arriba…all tacos are only $5 and Margaritas $10 at Bay City Burrito on Tuesday for those looking to partake in a Mexican fiesta. Bringing San Fran Mexican to the shores of St Kilda from the restaurant's premises on Shakespeare Grove, find a rustic, vibrant fit out of colourful panelling, communal tables and an open kitchen, creating a friendly vibe inside.
Start with grilled corn on the cob, chipotle mayo, grated cheese and Mexican spice blend; before devouring a pork taco, with Spanish onions, cilantro, red chilli salsa and melted cheese, on corn tortillas, washed down with a Jalapeño Margarita.
Inspired by Mexican and Peruvian cuisine, Calle Rey on King Street brings innovative plant-based fare to Newtown. Grab a Margarita to whet the whistle from the restaurant's Diablo Pisco bar and settle in beside the vibrant Day of the Dead wall mural, among potted cacti and pendent globes glowing moodily overhead.
Encouraging the consumption of plant-based nutrition is the ethos behind an innovative menu; drop in on Tuesday for cheeseburger tacos, with chopped patty, sweet potato ‘cheddar’, iceberg lettuce, tomato, classic mayo, gherkins and tomato sauce.
Fun and funky kitsch-style dining awaits at Muchacha Mexican Kitchen on Pitt Road in North Curl Curl. This vibrant eatery, where brightly coloured floral table cloths and mismatched plastic stools set a playful mood for Mexi-Cali fare at its best, offers either indoor dining, or alfresco watching the world pass by.
Perhaps share cheese and pork taquitos, with tomatillo salsa verde and chipotle yoghurt to start; followed by seared rare ahi tuna tacos, mango and habanero salsa, pico de gallo, guacamole, caramelised pineapple and pickled red onion.
