Fiano is a white grape from Southern Italy, where it has been grown for around 2000 years – there is none better than Heritage Estate’s Fiano range, with drops from 2018 to 2022, which can be tasted at the Granite Belt cellar door.
With a name derived from the Latin word for ‘apiana’ or ‘from bees', Fiano was highly-valued during the Middle Ages and often drunk as a tribute to nobility.
Fiano grapes are known for producing wines with a complex and intense flavour profile, with notes of honey, citrus, pear and almond, with a rich, full-bodied texture and long finish. These still, dry white wines are often aged in oak barrels to add complexity and depth.
Judged the best Fiano by James Halliday, a Heritage Estate Fiano reflects the 1000m altitude cool climate., decomposed mineral granite soils and terroir. The 2022 vintage is wild and barrel-fermented in new French oak and has a complex expression of spice, ginger and white peach aromas, with lavish splashes of finger lime, lemongrass, clove and quince flavours.
If you enjoy white wines and are looking for something new to try, Fiano is definitely worth seeking out – it will broaden your wine knowledge, deepen your appreciation for the art of winemaking and potentially lead to discovering new favourite wines.
A versatile wine for food pairings, think seafood, poultry, pasta dishes and salads – the wine’s acidity and mineral notes make it a great match for shellfish, while its full-bodied texture can stand up to rich, flavourful dishes.
Fiano has good aging potential and can develop more complex flavours with time in the bottle; some Fiano wines can be aged for several years and will continue to improve over time.
Heritage Estate’s Fianos can be compared in ‘Vertical Tastings’ during signature experiences at the cellar door on Granite Belt Drive in Cottonvale, such as the ‘5-Senses Degustation Dinner’ (monthly) and the ‘POETs Progressive Dinners' (every Friday).
These tastings highlight how the wine has evolved over time and changed in terms of colour, aroma and flavour; along with vintage variations, winemaking techniques and bottle variation.
