Happy hour is when I wine down!
The historical roots of Happy Hour date all the way back to the early 20th Century – the term is actually derived from American Naval slang in the 1920s. After World War I, happy hours were periods of time when sailors could engage in relaxing activities to relieve themselves of the drudgery of life at sea.
These days we head to our favourite venues for drinks and meal deals to make Happy Hour even happier…why limit happy to one hour?
Here are five of our fave venues where every hour is happy:
Embark on a Happy Hour Adventure
Fine without the fuss…that’s Sixty Smith restaurant and bar in Collingwood. Join the lively buzz of conversation at this trendy Smith Street venue and make yourself at home in plush surrounds of blue velvet chairs, gilded mirrors, bar stools and potted greenery, setting the scene for relaxed drinking and dining with family and friends.
Pull up a seat at the bar and be entertained by the friendly bartenders before starting your Happy Hour adventure with a tap beer, select wine or Spritz cocktail along with tapas such as oysters, or wild mushroom arancini with peas, truffle mayonnaise and grana Padano.
Join Yaki Hour Every Day
It’s all about Japanese-inspired fusion fare at Yaki Boy Woden on Keltie Street in Phillip. This Canberra diner is all style with cartoon-like murals on the walls, dark wood furniture and neon signage, while a long well-stocked bar promises cheeky cocktails to go with snacks, burgers and pizzas.
Stop in for Yaki Hour every day between 3 pm-5 pm and sip a vodka with Pepsi or spiced rum, a schooner of super-chilled mainstay lager or glasses of red and bubbles to go with snack plates like tempura prawns and Kewpie mayo, chicken wings, or spring rolls with sweet chilli sauce.
Tuesday-Friday Happy Hour
More than 150 years ago, an historic cornerstone was laid in Port Melbourne and from that day, locals have had a place to meet, catch up, celebrate and commemorate with a fine glass and good plate at The Cornerstone on Crockford Street. The 1860s’ charm and romance still greet you with original stonework and arched windows; step inside to find a comfy, modern space ideal for Sunday drinks with friends or your next big event.
Happy Hour runs from 4 pm-6 pm Tuesday to Friday for drinks specials on wine, spirits, pints, Koyomi and Aperol Spritz to go with pub classics like a steak sandwich with caramelised onion, tomato relish, salad, tomatoes, pickled cucumber, crispy bacon and chips.
Great Value Happy Hour Drinks
For a reinvented take on a classic American diner experience, head to Fat Freddy’s Beach Bar & Diner on Gold Coast Highway in Broadbeach. This architecturally designed, modern space delivers an electric atmosphere alongside live sport, bar and booth seating and a playlist of the best rock and electro music from the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Fat Freddy’s is a hangout for the infamous and celebrates with its ‘wall of infamy’, while Happy Hour from Monday to Friday delivers outrageously good value drinks such as half pints, jugs of lager and bubbles to go with bar snacks like spicy chicken wings.
Four Happy Hours Every Weekday
Standing at the meeting point of Fitzroy and Collingwood since 1853, the Birmingham Hotel on Smith Street delivers no-nonsense, just good, drinks and even better service. Whether it’s just a catch-up with mates, a cheap meal, functions, a game of footy or the biggest pay-per-view event of the year, ‘The Birmy’ as it is fondly known has got it covered.
Every weekday from 3 pm-7 pm, Happy Hour delivers $10 pints of selected beers, $7 house wines and $8 pints of beer of the month; best paired with snacks like salt and pepper calamari, popcorn chicken, or Cajun beef skewers and salsa verde.
