From beer and bratwurst in Germany to truffles and tiramisu in Italy, the best European food festivals are those that offer an insight into both the cuisine and culture of a country, helping you create memories that will last long after the final forkful!

Oktoberfest, Munich, Germany:

No list of European food festivals would be complete without mentioning Oktoberfest, the largest beer festival in the world, held annually in Munich, Germany. Running for more than two weeks from late September to the first weekend in October (hence the name), Oktoberfest attracts millions of visitors from around the globe who come to indulge in traditional Bavarian beer, hearty sausages, pretzels and other delicious German fare.

The festival is a celebration of Bavarian culture, complete with lively music, parades and a jovial atmosphere that makes it a must-visit for beer lovers and party-goers alike.

La Tomatina, Bunol, Spain:

La Tomatina is perhaps the world’s most famous food fight festival, held in the town of Bunol near Valencia, Spain. Every year on the last Wednesday of August, thousands of participants gather to throw tomatoes at each other in a friendly and messy battle that lasts for about an hour.

While the festival itself may not be about eating tomatoes, it’s a unique cultural experience that embodies the fun-loving spirit of the Spanish. After the tomato fight, many local restaurants and bars offer tomato-based dishes and drinks, allowing visitors to continue the celebration with delicious Spanish cuisine.

Taste of London, London, United Kingdom:

Proving once and for all that there is so much more to the royal city than bangers and mash is Taste of London -  an annual food festival held in the iconic Regent’s Park that showcases the best of the city’s vibrant food scene. Usually taking place in June, this festival gathers top Chefs, restaurants and artisan producers who offer tastings, cooking demonstrations and masterclasses.

Lyon Street Food Festival, Lyon, France:

However, travellers after a taste of French fare that is truly très bien should time their trip to coincide with the Lyon Street Food Festival (Les Invites de Villeurbanne) - a celebration of the country’s culinary excellence and gastronomic prowess.

Held annually in September, this festival transforms the streets into a bustling food market featuring more than 120 Chefs from around the world. Visitors can indulge in a wide range of gourmet street food, attend cooking workshops and enjoy live music and entertainment. Lyon, often considered the gastronomic capital of France, provides the perfect backdrop for food lovers to immerse themselves in French culinary delights.

Alba White Truffle Fair, Alba, Italy:

Similarly, while excellent food is on offer in abundance in Italy all year round, Italy’s Alba White Truffle Fair (Fiera Internazionale del Tartufo Bianco d'Alba) truly elevates the epicurean experience for hungry explorers. The prestigious event is held in the Piedmont region from October to November and celebrates the revered white truffle, one of the world’s most expensive and sought-after delicacies.

This festival pays homage to Italy’s most famous culinary export with pizza-making competitions, tastings of traditional Neapolitan pizzas and workshops where visitors can learn the art of pizza-making from master pizzaiolos. The festival also features live music, entertainment and a festive atmosphere that captures the essence of Neapolitan hospitality and culinary tradition.
