Can You Guess Australia’s Pizza Capital?

Sydney has been revealed as Australia’s most pizza-obsessed city, taking the crown of Australia’s official pizza capital, according to new data from premium outdoor pizza oven brand, Gozney

The city is chomping down on more slices per person and is the most discerning in the quality of its pizzerias - the research revealed the capital has the most pizza joints per capita with a massive 293 locations. Not only is Sydney home to arguably some of the pizzerias in the world offering pizza-lovers endless variety and choice, but more than two out of five of the pizzerias are awarded a four-star rating or above on TripAdvisor.

"Pizza clearly gets Sydney’s taste buds tingling and it’s easy to see why with a broad spectrum of flavours and types, from Neapolitana to deep dish. Sydney has become a hub for pizza specialists and pioneers over the last few years, in particular in the street pizza scene sparking innovative fresh takes on classic pizza styles and pop-up restaurants capturing the nation's hearts and stomachs,” says Christian Pohio, Gozney Australia's General Manager.

The methodology behind the research was robust taking into account three main factors: the average number of pizza-related Google searches per annum, the number of pizza joints rated four-stars and above, as well as the volume of pizzerias.

Coming in second with the silver medal was Melbourne, with Brisbane taking out the bronze for the most pizza obsessed. Surprising entrants in the top 10 list include Geelong taking 8th place in the rankings, the small coastal towns of Wollongong in 9th and Newcastle in 10th; all punching above their weight when it comes to pizza. Each city dominated the rankings with local pizza joints holding four-star reviews and above.

Interestingly, when it comes to pizza-related searches, Melbourne has the highest number nationally. The darling of the Australian food scene has shown to have a big appetite for a slice with more than two million pizza-related Google searches each year, making up a whopping third of the total six million searches that Aussie’s make on average annually.

Surprisingly, the data revealed one of Australia’s smaller capitals had the third highest number of searches per year for pizza-related terms.

"Adelaide is renowned for its high-class wine, but the volume in which Adelaidians are hitting the web and searching for a slice proves that pizza and wine really are the perfect pairing,” Christian says.

Logan City was also an unexpected result, ranking 8th in the nation in terms of pizza-related searches.

Street pizza has also been a huge catalyst in the Aussie scene by making the dish more accessible. Mr Tom’s Pizza in the Blue Mountains NSW slings pizzas in the back of his van for locals and The Altana Chill in Melbourne creates extraordinary pizzas for events and local pizza parties.
