Believe me, eggnog is all it’s cracked up to be and on Christmas Eve, December 24 we can celebrate the holiday season and National Eggnog Day.
Raise a holiday toast to this drink that has been around since the 16th Century and is named after a mug – a noggin is a small wooden mug typically used to drink ale.
In fact, this cocktail has literally caused a riot when in 1826 at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York cadets fuelled by eggnog spiked with whisky broke windows, fired guns, damaged property and knocked out a Lieutenant.
Known thereafter as the Eggnog Riot, 20 cadets were court-martialled – bonus fact, future president of the Confederate States Jefferson Davis was among the rioters.
Here are three more fun facts and an amazing recipe from to enjoy on Christmas Eve:
•Eggnog is also called a Hell’s Angel – in a 1932 book ‘Cold Comfort Farm’ the protagonist whips up a Hell’s Angel made with egg, brandy, cream and ice in a jam jar.
•According to kitchen records from Mount Vernon, President George Washington used to serve an ultra-boozy eggnog to guests. His version included whisky, rye, rum and sherry.
•An old Russian Yiddish version of the drink purportedly cures sore throats. Made with egg yolks, sugar and rum, it is served hot and traditionally used as a home remedy for sore throats.
Looking for a dairy-free, alcohol-free, healthy eggnog recipe the whole family can enjoy, well here it is - you won't even want to add the rum, this eggnog is so creamy and delicious!
