Say Arriba to a Fiesta of Flavours – It’s Mexican Week!

From the Editor, Leigh O’Connor.

Don’t wait for Taco Tuesday…this week it’s Mexican all the way every day as we celebrate all things South of the Border.

From tostadas to nachos, Tijuana to Tulum – if it sounds, smells or tastes Mexican we are all over it. We haven’t forgotten you parents out there dodging the school holiday blues with a curated guide to kids’ holiday packages, make sure to also check out the ghost festival that is about to descend on Sydney’s The Rocks in time for Halloween.

While tacos often steal the show, Mexican cuisine boasts a variety of other remarkable dishes that are well worth exploring. Marie-Antoinette Issa dishes up a dozen of the most unusual Mexican meals that you might not find at your mainstream taqueria.

Alongside inappropriately sporting a sombrero and mispronouncing the silent H in hola, confusing the meals found on the menus of a traditional Mex taqueria is a gringo giveaway! Fortunately, our guide to iconic Mexican foods explains the difference between some of the cuisine's most popular plates; so you never mix up your tacos and tostadas again.

Regional Mexican cuisine gives hungry diners so much more to taco about, than, well tacos! Instead, it serves up a tasty tapestry, woven from the delicious and distinct culinary traditions of its 31 states (and their numerous subregions) - each with its own unique flavours and techniques.

From the fresh seafood found along the coastlines of Cancun to the hearty offerings of Chihuahua in the North, the unique and delicious dishes of each state and city tell a story - reflecting a deep cultural heritage that is anything but monolithically Mexican. Check out Marie-Antoinette’s cross-country tour of Mexico from the North’s grilled meat to the South’s tropical fruit, there is a dish to tempt all palates.

We have some great advice to Spring clean your nutrition with Alimentary’s Alison Wright as we go from craving warm, comforting food in Winter months to lighter, fresher food in Spring. If you listen to your body, it has a natural rhythm – just like the seasons. Whereas Winter may bring with it the desire to bunker down, eat more and hibernate, Spring is a time of renewal, the extra sunshine and longer days providing us with new energy to get out and make some changes.

We’ve also carefully put together guides to the best Happy Hour deals in town in time for the footy finals, along with where to go for a Sunset Session this weekend, where to find the best wood-fired pizza and live music to keep the party going!
