Nothing says Spring and Summer more than a Sunday session at your favourite venue with family and friends.
Spend lazy warm days and evenings with a drink in hand and bite to eat as you celebrate the end of the weekend in style – rewind to the 1970s when pubs were only open on Sundays for two short hours, morning and afternoon.
The morning session was inadvertently known as ‘going to church’ and generally occurred around lunchtime, so many pubs started serving outdoor BBQ lunches in their sprawling beer gardens.
Whatever the reason for your Sunday Sesh – here are five of our favourite spots to indulge:
Enjoy riverside tranquillity any day or night at iconic dining destination Cooee on Mounts Bay Road in the heart of Perth’s CBD. This locally-loved restaurant and bar calls the iconic Old Swan Brewery home - boasting a red brick façade, tiled floors, cane furniture for chilling out on and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the banks of the Swan River.
Sundays sees mates gather over brunch or lunch with an icy beer and plates like smoked barramundi croquettes, Shark Bay crab and apple; before main temptations such as grain-fed striploin, onion soubise and salsa verde.
Head to Sydney’s biggest rooftop bar Lady Banks Rooftop on Restwell Street to find a multi-seasonal sanctuary, inspired by the horizon and outlook of Bankstown. Boasting 360-degree panoramic views capturing the impressive skyline to the Blue Mountains, this venue beautifully balances a modern, playful rooftop bar experience while paying elegant homage to its muse – the Lady Banks rose.
Soak up stunning Sunday views while sipping a Pirate’s Paradise rum cocktail and chowing down on charred octopus, Ajo Blanco, fennel and pickled grapes; moving onto to larger plates of signature tomahawk steak, with chermoula, charred lemon and skin-on chips.
The first distillery on the Bellarine Peninsula, locals and visitors alike drop by The Whiskery/Bellarine Distillery on Portarlington Road in Drysdale for a Sunday tipple and treat to eat. Growing a range of botanicals on the property to make unique gins, along with nicely maturing whisky, this is the place to satisfy the urge for a wee dram or shot.
Banish hunger with a slice of blue cheese, pear and walnut pizza, or pepperoni, tomato, mozzarella and basil; perhaps share a platter with a selection of smoked fish, pâté and crackers, or four different cheese, fruit, olives, cured meat and crackers.
Using sustainably sourced native botanicals, Penni Ave Distillery on Peninsula Avenue in Rye aims to change our perceptions of flavoured vodka. Located on the Southern Mornington Peninsula and one of few dedicated vodka distilleries in Australia, Penni Ave is 100% Australian-made and owned – plus 100% delicious.
Grab a bite to eat from visiting rotating food trucks to go with drops like Wattleseed & Honey Vodka, with a nutty biscuit flavour and caramelised toffee finish. Perhaps Lemon Myrtle and Kakadu Plum Vodka is more to your liking, best served in a boozed-up iced tea with fresh fruit and mint.
Nothing beats a Sunday session on the Gold Coast than chilling on the rooftop terrace with ocean views at Coast Beach Bar & Kitchen on The Esplanade in Surfers Paradise. Located on Level One of Ocean by Meriton just a stone’s throw from the iconic golden sands of Surfers Beach, Coast Kitchen offers casual, yet refined dining in stylish surrounds of trailing greenery, cane pendents and a curved bar.
Gather the gang and stop in at the weekend for a two-hour bottomless brunch and indulge in a food and beverage package of share plates like charcoal chicken salad, wombok, Thai herbs, chilli, black pepper and lime dressing; or local King prawns, split roasted with XO garlic butter and lime.
