‘Sunday, that’s my fun day. My I don’t have to run day.’ – The Bangles.
Sunday sessions are iconic Aussie culture at its best. Rewind to the 1970s when pubs were only open on Sundays for two short hours – morning and afternoon.
The morning session was irreverently referred to as ‘going to church’ and generally occurred around lunchtime so pubs started serving outdoor BBQ lunches in their sprawling beer gardens. These two-hour sessions appealed to different crowds – families were normal in the morning, but most dressed to impress in the afternoon as there was very little else to do after the pubs shut at six.
Fast forward and the good ol’ Sunday Session has lost none of its appeal as a new generation uncovers the delights of a lazy lunch spent with mates over a cold one at a local haunt. This week we celebrate Sundays – that fun day that heralds the end of a great weekend without a thought to the week ahead.
We tell you which Readers’ Choice Award-winning venues to visit on a Sunday, along with dessert destinations for a sweet treat, where the latte art is as good as the food and how to find lunch on the express train when needing a quick meal on the run.
