Take Your Food to the Street - It’s Street Food Week

From the Editor, Leigh O’Connor.

From the markets to the food trucks trundling around the city, street food plays an integral part in the Australian food map.

Whether it’s good old fish and chips, a meat pie or more exotic fare such as Greek souvlaki, Thai fish cakes or authentic Southern barbequed meat, we all have our go-to street food favourites.

This week we are talking everything from where to get the best dumplings and noodles to eating street food safely; don’t miss Mare-Antoinette Issa’s collection of six of the weirdest street foods on the planet.

Think dishes like ‘balut’ from the Philippines – this one is not for the faint-hearted – a delicacy consisting of a fertilised duck embryo that is boiled and eaten directly from the shell; or Mexico’s ‘insect caviar’, escamoles which are the edible larvae of ants harvested from the roots of agave plants.

Marie-Antoinette also explores the rise of fine dining street food around the world – a new breed of Chefs and vendors are blurring the lines between these two culinary realms, bringing gourmet dishes to the streets and redefining what it means to enjoy top-tier cuisine in a casual setting.

We travel to Asia with Laura Rancie as she uncovers 10 must-try street foods for you to enjoy on your next holiday…from pad Thai to Takoyaki in Japan there’s a whole world of flavour out there if you are prepared to be adventurous and experiment.

There aren’t many cookbooks that feature Filipino flavours in the Australian market, a void that is now being filled by authors such as Arlyn Osborne, who inspires home cooks to feel more confident and creative in the kitchen.

We review her latest book ‘Sugarcane’ – an iconic collection of recipes that offers extraordinary flavour combinations with treats that are as striking to behold as they are delicious to eat; we serve up three recipes to try at home from chilli crisp chocolate chunk cookies to a bourbon brown butter cashew tart.

Those looking to devour a perfectly-cooked steak can check out our collection of restaurants where ‘Steak Night’ is a guaranteed success; along with where to brunch this weekend and share plate restaurants to enjoy a meal with family and friends.

You're welcome!
