Bing (Crosby) and (Michael) Bublé aside, nothing croons ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ quite like Europe’s enchanting holiday markets. These twinkling wonderlands bring together centuries-old traditions, cosy treats and the kind of holiday spirit that makes even the chilliest of Winter nights feel warm, as you follow Rudolph’s lead and dash through the snow.
While Germany, often considered host to the best Christmas markets in Europe, sets the benchmark, don’t put all your baubles into one Berlin-based basket!
From mid-November to early January, many of the continent’s most picturesque squares are transformed into fairy-tale villages that dazzle visitors with lights, music and the tantalising aromas of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts.
Sorry, Mariah - all we want for Christmas is a ticket to one of these Santa-approved hot spots:L
Cologne, Germany
Cologne is the reigning King of Christmas markets, offering not just one but a collection of festive havens scattered throughout one of Europe’s oldest cities. The largest market sits in the shadow of the towering cathedral, where a canopy of lights twinkles like a Winter constellation. For a touch of whimsy, head to the Markt der Engel, where angels glide through the market, sprinkling their celestial charm.
Kids will adore the St Nicholas Village (Nikolausdorf), a festive nook bursting with storytelling and traditional charm - and, if you’re feeling adventurous, skate your way through the Heinzels Winter Fairytale, complete with a picturesque outdoor rink. The treats here are as unforgettable as the setting - so savour classic German gems like smoky bratwurst, washed down with warming plum brandy. Just don’t forget to leave room for lebkuchen, the spiced gingerbread that will transform even the grumpiest grinch into a veritable elf!
Salzburg, Austria
If there’s a city that could compete with Germany for the title of ‘most festive’, it’s Salzburg. This Austrian gem is where the carol ‘Silent Night’ was first performed and its Christmas markets are equally timeless. Stalls in the Christkindlmarkt serve up heart-warming classics like roasted almonds and bauernkrapfen (fried dough pastries), while choral concerts and sing-alongs amplify the Yuletide cheer.
Salzburg’s festive charm lies in its focus on craftsmanship. Instead of kitschy souvenirs, you’ll find hand-knitted socks, woodcarvings and intricately designed ornaments - perfect for stuffing stockings with a sprinkle of authenticity. If you’re feeling inspired, try your hand at baking gingerbread in one of the interactive workshops.
Budapest, Hungary
Hungary’s capital knows how to deck the halls - twice over! The Christmas markets at Vorosmarty Square and St Stephen’s Basilica both offer a feast for the senses. Think steaming bowls of goulash, tangy chimney cakes and glitzy laser projections that dance across the basilica’s facade. Budapest’s market magic peaks with an ice rink encircling a giant Christmas tree, making it the perfect setting for festive frolics.
For those who enjoy a bit of sparkle, the handmade jewellery and Hungarian ceramics make for excellent souvenirs. While, for a drink that packs a punch, swap your mulled wine for grog, a Hungarian specialty typically made from rum and water, though it can also include other ingredients like honey, bitters and spices, that’ll thaw even the frostiest of fingers.
Basel, Switzerland
In Basel, the Christmas markets rival its alpine peaks for beauty. Divided into two picturesque locations - Barfusserplatz and Munsterplatz - these Swiss favourites combine culinary delights with artistic treasures. Nibble on authentic Basel lackerli (gingerbread), savour gooey raclette or dive into a pot of festive fondue.
Munsterplatz is a wonderland for families, offering bauble-making workshops and gingerbread decorating for kids. Meanwhile, Barfusserplatz tempts shoppers with handmade wooden toys, intricate jewellery and nativity scenes that exude festive nostalgia.

Prague, Czech Republic
Few places do festivities better than Prague, where the city’s Gothic architecture becomes the ultimate backdrop for Christmas splendour. The Old Town Square market is a postcard brought to life, complete with carol-singing choirs and dazzling light displays. Indulge in svarak, the Czech version of mulled wine, paired with garlicky flatbreads or grilled sausages hot off the fire.
For a festive experience with a local twist, take the kids to the petting zoo in Old Town Square or marvel at the hand-blown glass baubles crafted by Prague’s artisans.
Helsinki, Finland
Finally, Finland’s Helsinki brings a mix of the quirky and the traditional to its Christmas market, all while staying eco-friendly. Picture yourself sipping hot mulled wine while browsing stalls filled with Finnish cheese and candied nuts. Fancy something a little more Nordic? Warm up in the wood-fired sauna right in the heart of Senate Square.
Choirs serenade the crowds on weekends, while events like a holiday outfit contest for dogs and a vegan ham bingo keep things playful. Helsinki’s market is a yuletide treat with a contemporary twist.
