Choosing Humane Food When Eating Out - It's Easy
Did you know that you can make an impact on the welfare of farm animals next time you’re dining out?
As a customer, you can have more of an impact on menu options than you might think. By demanding humane food at your local eatery, you’re sending a clear message to restaurant owners, food distributors and farmers that you want to be served higher welfare produce.
Choose Wisely is the RSPCA’s initiative to make choosing humane food when you’re eating out a whole lot easier.
RSPCA Encouraging Free Range
With so many food products and messages in the marketplace it’s often difficult to know what you are eating, let alone how it was produced. It’s not surprising that a growing number of people want to know where their food has come from and how it was farmed.
More than 80 businesses have committed to the RSPCA’s Choose Wisely initiative by serving eggs, chicken and pork produced from animals that have been farmed humanely.
Choose Wisely restaurants and cafes are responding to customer demands for higher welfare food and the RSPCA is very proud that over 3 million cage free eggs are being served at Choose Wisely registered businesses, every year. There’s also a growing number of free range chicken and pork options featuring on menus around the country.
Choose Wisely businesses are easy to spot, just look out for the logo or visit www.choosewisely.org.au
Showing Support for Farm Animals
You can show your support for farm animals by visiting a Choose Wisely business next time you’re eating out and if your favourite place to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner isn’t listed on the Choose Wisely website, why not give them a nudge? Simply ask them to register.
You can leave an RSPCA calling card on your table or when paying the bill to let them know that you support businesses that choose to serve humane food. Calling cards are available to download at www.choosewisely.org.au or email choosewisely@rspca.org.au and the RSPCA will send you as many as you like.
Also, don’t forget you can also improve the lives of farm animals by voting with your wallet when shopping at the supermarket. A quarter of Australians find food labels extremely confusing and to help with this, the RSPCA is encouraging you to purchase RSPCA Approved eggs and pork.
RSPCA Approved Farms
Approved Farming is the RSPCA’s farm assurance and food labelling scheme dedicated to improving the welfare of farm animals. RSPCA Approved farms are monitored closely to ensure our high animal welfare standards are maintained and animals on these farms are provided with an environment that meets all of their behavioural and physiological needs. Eggs and pork stamped with the RSPCA PAW of Approval is sourced from these RSPCA Approved farms.
