More About Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery
Put Tasmania in context in time and place at the museum and art gallery. Displays include models of extinct mega fauna that once roamed the island and the presumed extinct Tasmanian tiger, the thylacine. Indigenous culture, whaling and convict days are covered. Special interest collections include minerals, fossils, exquisite glass and jewellery and colonial art.
Hobarts role as the base for Australias Antarctic activities is recognised in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean displays and artifacts, including Antarctic expedition equipment. Special displays and art exhibitions feature regularly.
There is a childrens discovery space with lots of hands-on fun and education, and if sore feet or information overload threaten you can retire to the museum courtyard cafe.
