Looked online for restaurants we could bring a nice bottle of wine to with corkage fee. Ochre was one of the listed ones. When booking we were told we would not be able to bring said bottle of wine. When arriving I ordered a bottle of wine which the waiter told me was unavailable, he proceeded to recommend a wine from a completely different region that was $80 instead of the $50 I had ordered. I do not expect every waiter to no everything about wine, but at least being able to recognise the difference in regions rather than just going for an upsell would be nice. If it had at least been from the same region I probably wouldn't have minded the upsell. Otherwise service was great and meals were acceptable.
Oh no... Frozen chips and menus not what it looks like
Here we go.... order one side. Spicy chips. They are frozen (not house made) with salt and chilli. Would have expected more for the price. The twice cooked duck was dry, the rice on the side was dry with pan fried beans and it was drowned in some kind of tamarind sauce (I think to Help the dryness of the duck and rice). My family had the lamb which came as a few prince of lamb loin on a massive bed of salad. Menu should have of said salad with lamb. If you are from Melbourne or Sydney you will be very disappointed with the food. Service was great thought. Wine list was good.
Had amazing food at Ochre last night the produce was cooked to perfection and the pairing of flavours with local Australian produce is one we won't forget, highly recommend this restaurant.
The chef here has created a very interesting menu. Based around Australian bush foods, as well as showcasing local produce. Be adventurous and you will be rewarded!! The tasting plates or the degustation menu are the way to get the full ochre experience. I have dined here many times, the menu is frequently changing and exciting. The decor good do with an upgrade but that's probably the only downside.
This would have to be one of Cairns' best restaurants. The food was exceptional, our dishes had a nice asian influence with a Tom Yum sauce, then we also had little steak sandwiches which were great, the chips yum. Exceptional service - will be going back.
