About Peasant
Food from the earth is what you will find on the menu at Peasant on Lydiard Street North in Ballarat. This elegant restaurant caters for limited numbers of guests offering a monthly one-off degustation menu of European peasant-style food, alongside a captivating wine list. On Thursdays, Peasant goes à la carte with a new offering called BOWL - the menu changes less often and contains popular dishes from the degustation repertoire. Think entrées like goats’ cheese pannacotta, crostini, rocket and herb salad and onion jam; followed by mains of coq au vin, roast garlic mash, mushrooms and smoked cherry tomatoes. Decadent desserts such as vanilla and honey bavarois with honeycomb, white chocolate sauce and a honey tuile await, or finish with a cheese selection, quince jam and sourdough.
A few words from Peasant
Peasant was born from a modest and transient epicurean affair and has blossomed into an extraordinary eatery devoted to the flavours of European peasantry. At its core, Peasant reveres the gastronomic artistry that underpins the refined and intricate cooking styles that emerged from humble origins and now reign supreme.
The establishment thrives on connections—with the seasons, the providers, the patrons, the history, and the horizon. At Peasant they use locally-sourced seasonal fare, procured from neighbouring suppliers whenever possible. Honouring ancestral customs, they endeavour to safeguard this wisdom by crafting dishes that emanate a fervour for hearty, homegrown cuisine, and boldly experiment with inventive presentations, embracing novel events that cradle food in fresh and enticing ways.
Peasant strives for the tiniest ecological footprint, mindful of both material usage and energy consumption, while maintaining utmost authenticity. Within this domain, guests are greeted by a kitchen evoking the charm of bygone eras, where the quality of ingredients and the meticulousness of preparation reign supreme. Nothing is rushed, and everything is freshly harvested—an antithesis to the realm of fast food.
