Lovely dining experience
Food and service up to our Melbourne standards ?? Every dish we had was a standout, including the scallops they’re known for. Glad we ordered 2 desserts!

The historical building as you walk upto the front entrance of the restaurant sets the inviting scene upon arrival. Walking through the restaurant doors, the warm feeling of friendliness is reciprocated by a staff member as you are acknowledged with a welcoming smile. The scenery along with the seating arrangement inside gives you the feeling of a comfortable setting. The extensive wine list is pleasing to see along with the choice of a number of wonderfull local wines, a theme I like when visiting local winery regions for a culinary experience. The menu reciprocated the choice on offer also. As we we're served our courses by the friendly staff, it was clear to see that the skills in food presentation were exemplarary with each course. Piece by piece the meal unfolded as you peeled back the layers of flavour in each meal and when washed down with a delightful red the meal was enhanced even more. Thank you To Pipers of Penola for a wonderful dining experience and showcase of what the region has on offer.

Fine dining... at gastropub prices?
Charming setting; generous seating and its only 50 metres from the Royal Oak. Delicious entrees .. then the signature kingfish with ragout of chorizo, cuttlefish and prawn which I would suggest is an adequate reason for travelling from Adelaide. My companion was equally pleased with his beef and we both commended the side salad- generous plateful of fresh tender greens with the lightest of dressings. Good selection of local wines by the glass - well, one of us had fish - and we were there to visit wineries. Too many restaurants douse the salads in vinegar mixes which often don't do much for the leaves and can completely drown the taste of a good wine! We would, and should, have been satisfied with this but couldn't resist the autumn Melba which was sensational - aromatic peach sorbet, delicious raspberry mousse and I'm not usually fond of mousse- and a lightly grilled pear resting on thin pool of slightly bitter burnt caramel. Oooh.....

Had a great meal, will return, though I find some peoples rating of best regional restaurant in S.A. quite absurd, front of house staff were a little off their game but were always friendly and helpful. Particularly enjoyed the perfectly cooked Scallops with Lobster souffle.
