A lively hot spot in Melbourne’s outer south-east dining scene, The Independent Gembrook is well loved by loyal locals. Housed in a fully restored historical building on Main Street, the spacious eatery boasts high ceilings and a fully open plan kitchen with a relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy a range of tap beers and wines from boutique wineries, before indulging in an exciting menu which draws influence from Argentinean Chef Mauro Callegari’s background. Start with the highly addictive Vieiras – lime cured scallops, shallots, green chilli and spiced salt; before devouring Cordero - slow roasted Gippsland lamb shoulder, carrots, chilli, coriander, peanuts and a side of smoked paprika chips with pecorino. Be sure to save room for a dessert of chocolate pot, with orange marmalade and puffed rice.

“When I first visited this region, I was introduced to the Independent restaurant by a local real estate agent who raved about their mouth-watering food. I have to agree that the variety of dishes on offer is scrumptious. We often visit Gembrook, as we love its quaint village charm and the long scenic walk alongside the railway track to work up an appetite. The Independent has certainly put this place on the map as one of the key reasons to visit more often. There’s a relaxed amicable banter with the staff and the ambiance is inviting. I had never been to an Argentinean restaurant before, so I had no idea what to expect. I have since returned again and again and again… It’s no surprise they’ve won awards. Their fine fusion of dishes are not only delicious, but with all those fresh, flavoursome vegetables, my body always feels totally ‘NOURISHED’ after dining here in the hills”
