Cheers to the 2024 Wine Harvest – What Will It Bring?

From the Editor, Leigh O’Connor.

Autumn signals wine harvest time as the leaves change colour and vineyards around Australia contemplate new vintages.

We have never been more open-minded and knowledgeable about the wine we drink – we want to know about different Australian wine regions, experience the history behind the glass and learn what wine to drink to suit the occasion.

Our interest in wine is finally catching up to our interest in food!

This week we focus on all things grape as we celebrate the birth of new wines, trends and paired menus…from Readers’ Choice Award-winning venues to the best Australian vineyard tours.

Embark on a journey of exploration around the country’s oldest vineyards and discover what trends experts are predicting for 2024 from the emergence of meticulously crafted rosé to why Aussies are opting to chill their red wine and the rise of innovative packaging for boxed vino.

Are our kids getting enough dairy? More than 4 million Aussie kids returned to the classroom this month which means parents are faced with an age-old battle, packing a healthy lunchbox that comes home empty at the end of every day.

Research shows primary-aged children consume a third of their daily energy intake during school hours but most of that energy comes from food such as biscuits, chips, cakes and muesli bars rather than vegetables, fruit and dairy. We show you how to pack a lunchbox with a serving of dairy nutrition and keep it cool with safety hacks and tips.

For this week’s Chef Chat meet Thomas Heinrich from Table by Canberra Gourmet restaurant in Greenway, who found himself working a 36-hour shift in New York during the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center when his colleagues were unable to come to their shifts.

He also dishes up a guest favourite recipe for cured tuna and black garlic tart with goats’ feta and Spring peas which is as pretty on the palate as it is on the plate…you’re welcome!

It’s National Margarita Day on Thursday and we’ve rounded up five cantinas where you and your amigos can don a sombrero, down a shot and revel in everything tacos and tequila; along with the best venues to experience Thrills on the Grill style menus to go with your glass of red.
