When you think of picnics, long days, lush greenery and warm breezes likely come to mind.
Who says picnics must be saved for Summer days in the sun? In fact, the history of picnics can actually be traced back to the sophisticated indoor gatherings of the French aristocracy.
It is believed that the word picque-nicque was first recorded in France in 1692. A combination of the words ‘picque’ (piquer) ‘to pick’ and ‘nique’ a small thing describing the informal indoor feasts of Paris’s fashionable elite.
Drawing inspiration from that legacy (and adding a little modern-day creativity), it becomes perfectly clear that picnics are a beloved pastime that can be enjoyed year-round even in the cooler mid-year months.
A Winter picnic can be an equally magical experience with the crisp air, cosy blankets and seasonal delights all adding an extra layer of charm.
Here’s how to plan the perfect one:
Dress for success
The key to staying comfortable during a Winter picnic is dressing appropriately for the weather. Opt for warm, layered clothing made from breathable fabrics such as wool or fleece to trap heat and insulate your body.
Don't forget essential Winter accessories like hats, scarves, gloves and thermal socks to keep extremities warm. Waterproof footwear is also a must. Especially if your picnic spot is prone to snow or mud.
Location, location!
When planning a Winter picnic, it's essential to select a suitable location that offers protection from the elements while still providing scenic views and outdoor ambience. Look for sheltered areas such as covered pavilions, gazebos or picnic shelters in parks or nature reserves. If you prefer a more adventurous setting, consider packing a portable fire pit or camping stove to keep warm and cook hot meals on-site.
In the mood for (warm) food
While traditional picnic fare like sandwiches and salads may be better suited for warmer weather, Winter picnics call for heartier, warming dishes that satisfy the soul. Think thermos flasks filled with hot soups or stews, accompanied by crusty bread or savoury pastries. Pack a selection of gourmet cheese, charcuterie and artisanal crackers for grazing, along with seasonal fruit, nuts and decadent desserts like chocolate fondue or open-flame-roasted marshmallows for a sweet treat.
Some like it hot
Nothing beats sipping on a steaming cup of hot cocoa, mulled wine or herbal tea during a Winter picnic. Pack a thermos or insulated flask filled with your favourite hot beverage to keep you warm from the inside out. Consider adding a splash of bourbon or rum to your hot drinks for an extra kick of warmth and flavour. Don't forget to bring along reusable mugs or insulated cups for serving.
Cushion the blow
Create a cosy and inviting atmosphere at your Winter picnic by bringing along plenty of blankets, throws and cushions to snuggle up with. Layer blankets on the ground to create a comfortable seating area and provide extra cushions or pillows for added comfort. Consider investing in heated blankets or hand warmers to keep guests warm and toast, especially if temperatures are particularly chilly.
The reason for the season
Take advantage of the Winter landscape and embrace seasonal activities that add a sense of adventure and excitement to your picnic. Bring along sleds or toboggans for some frosty fun on nearby hills or trail; or organise a friendly snowball fight for some light-hearted entertainment. If you're near a frozen lake or pond, consider ice skating or ice fishing as unique picnic activities that everyone can enjoy.
If in doubt…don’t go out!
Above all, it’s important to prioritise safety and comfort during your Winter picnic adventure. If the weather is really not lending to an outdoor occasion, relocate and set up your space indoors.
Simply lay out a picnic blanket or spread it across the living room floor, surrounded by cushions for added comfort. Create an inviting ambience with fairy lights, candle and soft music and transform your space into a charming indoor oasis perfect for savouring delicious picnic fare.
