As the footy finals heat up, fans are growing increasingly frustrated with the steep prices of stadium food.
With a pie and beer nearing $20 combined with the domination of interstate teams this year, one thing is certain—most Melburnians will be catching the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, September 28 from the comfort of their couch.
Thanks to 67-year-old tradie Neil ‘Towners’ Townley there’s now an affordable way to enjoy the taste of footy finals at home. Towners, a local footy veteran and grandfather from Carrum Downs, has gone viral for his innovative range of footy-themed pizzas.
Working part-time at Bubba Pizza, he’s created three new pizzas - the Meat Pie Pizza, Hot Dog Pizza and Dim Sim Pizza - all for a bargain price of $10.
"I’ve been playing local footy my whole life and I know how important the game is to people,” says Towners. "With everything getting more pricey, I wanted to create something that still lets people enjoy those classic footy flavours without breaking the bank!”
The response has been overwhelming with Towner’s videos reaching between 6-7 million views per month on his ‘Prune Masters’ Instagram and TikTok, capturing the hearts of Aussies across the nation. His no-nonsense, larrikin personality and love for both footy and food have resonated with fans young and old.
The Meat Pie Pizza features classic beef mince pie and gravy; the Hot Dog Pizza is loaded with sausage, mustard and ketchup; while the Dim Sim Pizza, made with the famous South Melbourne Market dim sims, pairs perfectly with a drizzle of soy sauce on a crispy base.
Bubba Pizza’s Managing Director Damian Hopper understands the importance of keeping both community and affordability at the heart of what they do.
"We’re all feeling the pinch these days and as a family-owned business, we know how important it is to offer great value. Our footy-themed pizzas are all about bringing people together to enjoy the footy finals without stretching the budget!” says Damian.
Footy fans can get their hands on the Meat Pie, Hot Dog and Dim Sim Pizzas for a bargain price of $10 at all Bubba Pizza stores.
