Robust Reds for Winter Sipping – Three of Our Favourite Drops.

There’s nothing better than a glass of red wine in front of the fire on a chilly Winter’s night…it not only warms the soul but also relaxes the mind after a long day of work or play.

For those of us who are health conscious, never fear – there are also benefits to imbibing a red:

Darker grapes are higher in antioxidants and can help with heart health, along with lowering bad cholesterol and reducing the risk of cancer. Red wine is also credited with keeping your memory sharp, treating the common cold and lessening the occurrence of depression in the middle-aged to elderly.

Here are three of our favourite drops to try this Winter:

Copperhead Wines is a boutique family-owned vineyard in the Yering parish of the Yarra Valley. The climate is cool with a high diurnal temperate allowing Copperhead to produce a selection of cool climate wines. Careful vineyard management ensures that yields are low to produce intense fruit flavours; alongside minimal winemaking techniques ensuring that all the flavour is preserved.

The 2016 single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the cool climate characteristics of the Yarra Valley. This wine is medium-bodied, with a palate displaying notes of dark berries and chocolate - perfect for warming up on a cold Winter’s evening. The cellaring has been done for you and the cool climate takes the big punch out of this Cabernet Sauvignon, still well balanced just not so bold.

Two sisters Jane Richards and Claire Davies – with eight children between them - own and operate Eight at the Gate vineyard in the Wrattonbully wine region on South Australia's Limestone Coast. This first-generation, family-owned and operated winery produces premium cool climate wines with a strong expression of terroir.

The sisters' philosophy around growing grapes and making wine is much the same as raising their children; provide a sustainable, healthy, nurturing environment and don’t interfere too much!

Eight at the Gate 2019 Family Selection Shiraz is deep crimson red in colour, with aromas of lifted dark cherries, blue fruits and undertones of stewed fruit; while mulberry and Satsuma plum balance a top charry French oak. With a medium to full palate weight, powerful flavours of spice, pepper and sumac; pair this drop with herbed lamb dishes.

Hollydene Estate's premium, award-winning wines are produced from low-yielding, very high-quality fruit originating from three of the oldest and most iconic vineyards in the Upper Hunter. With the best environmental practices applied by the estate’s highly experienced viticulturists in producing grapes picked at optimum quality and flavour, the wines are traditionally produced and then carefully cellared in Hollydene’s world-class wine storage facilities.

Hollydene Estate 2014 Shiraz is a medium-bodied wine - bright crimson red in colour with leather, spice and charry oak on the nose. The palate shows great depth of flavour combined with savoury tannins and soft acidity; enjoy now or after several years of careful cellaring.
