Wine of the Week – Coughlan Estate 2021 Chenin Blanc.

There’s nothing better on a hot Summer’s day than an ice-cold glass of white wine – how about Coughlan Estate’s 2021 Chenin Blanc?

This flagship old vine, dry-grown white wine reveals notes of green apple skin, yellow nectarines and almonds on the nose, dotted with hints of all spice and freshly leavened bread. A crisp white with natural acidity laced with tones of apricot, jasmine and wet slate lead to the expectancy of a savoury palate with white fruit tannin and textures of crushed granite.

A lively and lingering finish of white florals and zested lime make this white an ideal pairing for creamy chicken and pork dishes, along with flaky fish and rich seafood, especially crab meat and lobster.

Located just outside the town of Donnybrook in WA and 40 km from the city of Bunbury, Coughlan Estate on Upper Capel Road is a self-sustaining vineyard with award-winning wines and a long history of knowledge.

With some of the oldest vines in the Geographe region, planted in 1978, this hidden gem is family-owned and operated by Preeti and Brad Coughlan and watched over carefully by their very friendly wine dogs – your welcoming committee!

The cellar door combines wine, art and photography along with straw bales, solar power and a solar power passive construction of the building. It and the café are open from Thursday to Monday for tastings and food, as well as organised events throughout the year; click here for details.

After your wine tasting, gaze out over the vines and stop in for a Manchego and chutney board to share, with gherkin, artichoke, sun-dried tomato and house seed crackers or a housemade gourmet beef, Shiraz and rosemary pie and rosemary relish.
