On Cloud Wine – Four White Wines Perfect for Easter.

After working nine until wine, we all need an Easter break…everything happens for a Riesling, right?

White wine is the ideal accompaniment to the fresh fish and seafood that appears on our plates every Easter. It doesn’t matter if the glass is half full or half empty – there’s clearly room for more wine!

When it comes to matching seafood and wine, the style of vino you choose is dictated by its delicacy. From the classic combination of crisp Australian sparkling with freshly shucked oysters to grilled shellfish with a modern Chardonnay, there are a vast array of wine and seafood-matching opportunities.

Here are four wines and pairing suggestions to make your Easter extra special:

Brothers Matthew and Jonathan Hughes established Mewstone vineyard on the banks of Tasmania’s D’Entrecasteaux Channel in 2011 and create expressive single site wines with minimum intervention. The vineyard is a former cherry orchard and now produces both Mewstone and Hughes & Hughes wines, such as the 2021 Chardonnay.

This Hughes & Hughes label is made with fruit from vineyards in the Coal River, Derwent Valley and the North-west; with notes of white stone fruit, overlaying citrus, gentle reduction and oak aromas, the racy acidity is balanced by rich textures and pairs well with dishes such as barbequed marron, prawn risotto and seafood in a creamy sauce.

Hollydene Estate’s premium, award-winning wines are produced from low yielding, very high-quality fruit originating from three of the oldest and most iconic vineyards in the Upper Hunter. With the best environmental practices applied by the estate’s highly experienced viticulturists in producing grapes picked at optimum quality and flavour, the wines are traditionally produced and then carefully cellared in world-class wine storage facilities.

Enjoy a glass of 2014 Hollydene Estate Semillon, which won silver in the NSW Wine Awards in 2020, with steamed snapper and Asian flavours, raw seafood such as oysters and fresh, light seafood-based salads. Clear pale straw in colour with citrus lemon, lime and tropical aromas, this wine features flavours of pineapple following through to the palate.

Nestled in the beauty of the Scenic Rim, good food and wine, magic views, peace and quiet await at Sarabah Estate on Rymera Road in Canungra. Set on 50 acres with just on 10 under grapes, this hidden gem boasts not only a cellar door, but also Chalet Bistro for dining among the lush vines and the Smoke & Vine Bar for pizza and a glass of Pinot Grigio.

A vibrant and well-balanced wine, the 2020 Pinot Grigio has crisp and fresh acidity from grapes harvested in late February after a hot, dry Summer. Pale in colour with a beautiful green hue, the palate bursts with fruity hints of pear and melon; twirl your fork around a plate of blue swimmer crab spaghettini, lemon, chives and garlic, as you sip an ice-cold glass this Easter.

Wine, food, music and good times await at Oneday Estate Winery & Function Centre on Curlewis Road in Curlewis. Just an hour’s drive from Melbourne, this winery is one of the Bellarine Peninsula’s most unique estates, specialising in weddings and functions in picturesque country surrounds; while the indoor reception room has been thoughtfully constructed from handcrafted recycled timber, stone and iconic fittings.
